The 1990 Atlanta Recital
The image is from the program to a recital I gave in November 1990 in Atlanta, where I lived then. That was during a very prolific period in my life as a composer, and the program consisted primarily of recently completed works. The central focus of the program was my set of Nine Preludes for Piano Solo, which I wrote between my third and fourth piano sonatas. I believe that occasion was the first time I performed the set publicly in Atlanta. The program also included a flutist, who performed my Variations for Flute and Piano, and an oboist, who played my Sonata for Oboe and Piano — both works that I had completed that year.
The only other composer represented in the recital was Scriabin. The program closed with two of his best-known etudes: the sorrowful Etude in C-sharp Minor (op. 2/1), which Scriabin wrote at age 15 (!); and the virtuosic Etude in D-sharp Minor (op. 8/12).
Although the recital was not recorded, I do have other recordings of all of the music in the program. So don’t despair: Through the magic of YouTube, you can still be transported back to that evening. 🙂
