Life and Career of Robert Cunningham

From Scarlatti to Scriabin

This program is from a solo recital I gave in Atlanta almost exactly 30 years ago, on April 23, 1988.

The highlight of the program (just after intermission) was the premiere of my Piano Sonata No. 3, but the program also included both of my Poems for piano along with works by Scarlatti, Chopin, Liszt, and Scriabin. It was a highly demanding program, but my pianistic skills were then at their zenith.  As an encore, I played Liszt’s famous Liebestraum No. 3.  I must have been in some kind of hypnotic trance during that performance, because I have no memory of having played the encore, but the hard evidence is in the recording of the recital!

I have created score videos from the recital recording for most of the works on the program, including the encore.  I made digital recordings of the two Poems in more recent years, so I am substituting those here.  I have created an audio tracks on SoundCloud for the two Scarlatti sonatas and for my Piano Sonata No. 3, but no video.  (I revised the Sonata No. 3 a couple of years ago, and my intention is to record the new version to video as well as audio, probably within the next year.)  So between the videos and the SoundCloud tracks, you can enjoy the entire original program right here. 🙂
